Creating Connections with Social Media

Connecting with students and parents and building relationships is all about meeting them where they are. As the parent of a teenager, I realized that getting emails was NOT where teenagers are. Texts are their life. However, for legal and safety considerations, I did not want students to have my phone number. Remind101 was a way to bridge that gap. Ninety percent of my parents and students are signed up for my Remind101. I can text reminders, updates, class info, etc. Twitter is another way to build relationships and facilitate discussion. I have used Twitter to run nighttime test review (like PD in your PJs) and share my passion for my subject. Part of what I like to tell adults about this is to just get over your fear and try it. Start small, make mistakes, listen to the kids, and embrace technology. It is where they are.

I am a 10 year "learner" in RRISD at McNeil High School. I teach World History to Sophomores. My philosophy is to try to learn something new every day and have applied this to technology as well. As a BIG fan of Star Wars and Star Trek, I guess my curiosity about technology is natural. Some might think that technology is only for CATE classes, but I can tell you it is very much in the Liberal Arts as well.
